Tears flowed freely when the remains of the slain Kano business woman,
Mrs. Bridget Agbahime, was yesterday interred at her matrimonial home,
Umudimodu village in Amaukwu-Orodo autonomous community in Mbaitoli
Local Government Area of Imo State.
Relations and hundreds of sympathisers, who extolled the sterling
virtues of the late woman, wept uncontrollably when the casket bearing
her remains was interred into the mother earth.
People who gathered, rained courses on the Islamic fanatics who killed
the woman because she expressed her disapproval of allowing them
convert the frontage of her shop into a praying ground.
Her husband and children as well as members of her immediate family
wept uncontrollably, bemoaning what has become of the matriarch of the
family and tasking the Police to get to the root of the matter and
ensure speedy and justiciable trial.
Community leaders also lamented that people could just snuff life out
of people, pointing out that such attitude had remained, particularly
in the northern parts of the country because security agencies and
government do not act as they ought to have done, giving the impression
that they give tacit approval to such extrajudicial killings.
Speaking at the burial site, the Senator representing Imo East
Senatorial Zone, Senator Sam Anyanwu commended the people for avoiding
reprisal attacks and enjoined Nigerians to embrace peace at all times,
inspite of the level of provocation.
Represented by the President-General of Mbaike Congress, Comrade Sam
Nwoke, the Senator harped on the need for people to live in unity and
called on security agencies to be proactive at all times and avoid such
killings in the future.
Another sympathiser and member representing Ikeduru/Mbaitoli Federal
Constituency in House of Representatives, Hon. Henry Nwawuba urged
Nigerians to always see themselves as one irrespective of their
religious differences.
Represented by the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Sir
Emma Opara, Nwawuba maintained that it was important for Nigerians to
always see themselves as one no matter their geographic location or
religious differences.
According to him, “everyone was created by God, who in His mercy,
allows the sun to shine on everyone irrespective of their religious
beliefs”, stressing that people must cultivate the attitude of
tolerance at all times.
Mrs Bridget Agbahime was allegedly beheaded on June 4th by some
misguided Islamic extremists in Kano for allegedly refusing to allow
them to pray in front of her shop. Some of them claimed she blasphemed
against the Islamic religion.
Her husband, who was around the scene when she was killed, was said to
have escaped being lynched by whiskers as the police arrived early
enough to save him from being killed also.
Husband of the deceased, Pastor Agbahime thanked all the people who
identified with his family during the ugly saga and prayed God to
console them and grant the killers of his wife the grace of
repentance.
