Provost calls for sustenance of improved science education
The Provost of the Alvan Ikoku College of Education (AIICE), Dr. Blessing Ijioma has called for the sustenance of improved science education in the country to meet the developmental needs of the nation.
Dr. Ijioma made this call during the maiden inaugural lecture of the institution, which was witnessed by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Prof. Bappa - Aliyu Muhammadu and other dignitaries.
In her epoch making lecture, titled “Sustaining developments in science and technology education in Nigeria through functional research,” Dr. Ijioma, who has written her name in the history of the institution as the first Provost to organise inaugural lecture in the school, traced science education in Nigeria from the colonial era to the present time.
The Provost noted the year 1977 to be a pivotal date in science education in the country with the introduction of the National Policy in Education and the subsequent transformations in the curriculum and teaching of science and technology.
She revealed most of her research from over two decades of academic work, have contributed to improving the yields and nutrition level of common foods.
While hammering on the essence of her lecture, Dr Ijioma called for the sustenance of the development of science and technology in the country through adequate research.
She however regretted that there were still some impediments hampering the progress of science and technology education in the country, especially in the areas of teacher improvement and equipment for practical in schools.
