Provost calls for sustenance of improved science education

The Provost of the Al­van Ikoku College of Education (AIICE), Dr. Blessing Ijioma has called for the sustenance of im­proved science education in the country to meet the de­velopmental needs of the na­tion.
Dr. Ijioma made this call during the maiden inau­gural lecture of the institu­tion, which was witnessed by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Prof. Bappa - Ali­yu Muhammadu and other dignitaries.
In her epoch making lec­ture, titled “Sustaining devel­opments in science and tech­nology education in Nigeria through functional research,” Dr. Ijioma, who has written her name in the history of the institution as the first Provost to organise inaugural lecture in the school, traced science education in Nigeria from the colonial era to the pres­ent time.
The Provost noted the year 1977 to be a pivotal date in science education in the country with the introduc­tion of the National Policy in Education and the subse­quent transformations in the curriculum and teaching of science and technology.
She revealed most of her re­search from over two decades of academic work, have con­tributed to improving the yields and nutrition level of common foods.
While hammering on the essence of her lecture, Dr Ijioma called for the suste­nance of the development of science and technology in the country through adequate re­search.
She however regretted that there were still some imped­iments hampering the prog­ress of science and technology education in the country, es­pecially in the areas of teacher improvement and equipment for practical in schools.
